Belize entry requirements and money tips

General, evergreen notes. Fees and entry rules change. Confirm them with an official source the week you fly.

Confirm the official source first

Entry rules, tourist stamps, departure charges, and visa lists change. This page will not quote a fee, a stamp length, or a form number. Those are the details that go stale, and a hotel guide is the wrong place to be precise about them.

Use a primary source. US travelers should read the US Department of State page for Belize and re-check it the week they fly. Travelers from other countries should use their own government's foreign-travel advice, plus Belize Immigration. If this page and an official page disagree, the official page wins. Email reservations@linapoint.com if a rule affects your arrival time. The resort can meet a boat. It cannot waive an immigration requirement.

The Belize travel guide on this site is older and shorter, and it states a visa note this page repeats only as that guide's wording, with the caveat below. The route itself, airports and boats, is on how to get to Ambergris Caye.

What this site already says about visas

The Belize guide says US, Canadian, UK, and EU citizens do not need a visa for stays up to 30 days. Treat that as a general note the resort has published, not as a decision by an immigration officer. Your passport country, the length of your stay, a previous overstay, and the rules in force on the day you land all matter. Some travelers need a visa even when a neighbor's passport does not. Confirm before you buy a nonrefundable international ticket.

This page also will not tell you that a passport must be valid for six months, or for any other fixed buffer, because that detail is exactly the kind of rule that differs by nationality and that airlines enforce on their own. Carry a passport that is valid for your whole stay, and ask the airline what validity they require to board. Put the passport in your personal item, not in a bag you plan to check through to a domestic hop you booked separately.

Children, one-way tickets, and stays that run past the stamp you expect are the cases to solve before you fly. The resort's minimum stay is 2 nights. An immigration stamp is a different clock. Do not assume they match.

At the airport, in practice

BZE is where international passengers clear immigration and customs. The domestic hop to San Pedro happens after that, on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air, or you leave the airport area for a water taxi. Build time for the line. A connection that looks fine on a map can fail if the inbound flight is late and the small plane does not wait. Tell reservations your real landing time once you know it.

Answer the officer's questions directly. You are a visitor staying at a hotel in San Pedro. The property address they may ask for is Lina Point, Ambergris Caye. You do not need a printed novel. A reservation confirmation on your phone is the useful page to have offline. Keep a little cash in the wallet you can reach, because small counters after you land are a bad moment to discover that your card was declined.

Belize stays on UTC−6 all year. There is no daylight saving time. Your phone will usually update. Your paper itinerary might still be in the zone you left.

The Belize dollar, and the peg this site publishes

The currency is the Belize dollar, BZD. This site already publishes the peg: 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar. That peg has been in place for a long time. If you need the official statement, read the Central Bank of Belize rather than a third-hand rate. Do not expect a street rate that improves on 2 to 1. If someone offers you a "better" rate in cash, you are not getting a deal you should take.

US dollars are accepted widely in San Pedro, which the Belize guide also says. Room rates are quoted in US dollars and change daily. You do not need to convert a nightly rate into Belize dollars to see live prices. The rates page explains how direct booking works, and the rooms page shows the layouts.

Small bills are more useful than hundreds. A water taxi, a tip, a golf-cart deposit, or a stall may not want to break a large note, and some of those transactions prefer cash even when the hotel took your card without comment. ATMs exist in San Pedro. They can be out of cash, or your bank can block them. Do not land with zero cash and a single card you have not told your bank about.

Cards are normal in town and at the resort. They are not universal on every boat. Ask before you assume a snorkel tip jar takes Apple Pay.

Tips, tax, and what not to memorize

This page does not publish a mandatory tip percentage. Service practices vary by restaurant, and a number printed here would pretend to be a rule. If a bill already shows a service charge, read it before you add another one. At the resort, paid add-ons and experiences show their prices on experiences and on the add-ons list. The Hol Chan half-day is listed from $60. A golf cart for 4 hours is listed at $35, with tax, insurance, and the bridge pass included. Those are activity prices, not immigration fees.

Do not memorize a departure tax from a blog. If a fee is due when you leave, the airline or the official advice will say so in the language that is current. Paying the wrong person at the curb is not a fee. It is a mistake.

How this connects to the rest of the stay

Pack the documents in the same pouch as your medication. The clothing list is on what to pack. Weather does not change the passport, but it changes whether September is a wise month for a nonrefundable fare. Hurricane season and sargassum are on best time to visit. Free cancellation at the resort is 30 or more days before check-in, 50% from 14 to 29 days, and nothing inside 14 days. That is the hotel rule. It does not refund an international ticket.

The reef, once you are in, is a boat from the island. Gear at the room is included. The reserve trip is not. Read snorkeling and the Hol Chan guide after the paperwork is settled.

Couples should know that honeymoon extras are paid, which is the whole point of the honeymoon guide and the honeymoons page. A group buyout is 18 king rooms and up to 36 guests, on groups. Travel advisors earn 20% on the stay and should book through travel advisors, with the client's passport questions still belonging to the client and to official sources. Weddings add The Mayan and are on weddings. None of those pages changes immigration.

Keep a second copy of the reservation confirmation in email, not only inside an app that needs signal. San Pedro's airport and the water-taxi dock are small, and a dead phone is a bad moment to prove you have a room. The front desk can look you up by name. Immigration and the airline cannot.

If you want a sense of the property before you spend the money, read reviews. Then check the official entry page one more time. The reef will still be there. The rule you did not re-read is the one that keeps people off the plane.

Book direct at linapoint.com

Room rates change daily. Booking direct is the best price and beats online travel agencies by at least 6%. The minimum stay is 2 nights.

Questions travelers ask

Do US, UK, or Canadian travelers need a visa for Belize?

The Belize guide on this site says US, Canadian, UK, and EU citizens are generally stamped in without a visa for a short stay. That is not a ruling. Check your government's travel advice and Belize Immigration before you buy tickets. Length of stay, fees, and visa rules change.

Can I use US dollars in San Pedro?

Yes. US dollars are widely accepted. The Belize dollar is pegged at 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar, which is the rate already published on this site. Small boats and market stalls may still prefer cash. Cards are common in town.

Where do I confirm the current entry rule?

Use an official source, not a blog recap. US travelers can start with the US Department of State Belize page. Everyone else should use their own foreign office plus Belize Immigration. Re-check in the week you fly.
