What to pack for Belize and Ambergris Caye

What earns a place in the bag for Ambergris Caye, and what the room at Lina Point already has so you can leave it at home.

The short version

Pack for sun, a short boat ride, and a golf cart. Leave the formal wardrobe, the hard suitcase if you can, and any snorkel gear you do not already love. Lina Point includes snorkel equipment, kayaks, and paddleboards with the room. Wi-Fi, daily breakfast, and the infinity pool are included too. Reef boats, dinners, and spa time are not.

This page is the packing plan, including the domestic flight that punishes an oversized bag. The Belize travel guide is the short country overview if you want the wider picture first.

The season changes the rain layer, not the whole bag. Dry season is about November through April. Green season adds a better chance of a short afternoon shower. September and October add hurricane-season caution. The detail is on best time to visit. Sargassum is seaweed, not something you pack for, except that a rash guard is more useful than a cover-up if the beach is weedy and you are still getting in the water.

Clothes that survive a cart and a deck

Bring lightweight clothes you can rinse and wear again. Two swimsuits are enough for a week if you have somewhere to hang them. A long-sleeve shirt or a rash guard matters more than a stack of T-shirts, because the boat ride is where people burn. Evenings on an overwater deck can feel cooler than the afternoon in town, especially in January, so one light layer is worth the space. You do not need a jacket beyond that unless you run cold in air conditioning.

Shoes: sandals you can walk in, and a pair that can get wet on the dock. Water shoes help on a slippery pier and come off before you put fins on. Closed shoes are optional unless you have a mainland ruin day with uneven stone. Flip-flops alone get old if you are walking San Pedro.

One outfit that is not beachwear is enough for a meal in town. San Pedro is not a jacket-and-tie island. It is also not only swim trunks. If you added the $250 private rooftop dinner, the same outfit covers it. The dinner is a paid add-on, described on honeymoons, not a dress code this page invents.

Reef kit

The room has snorkel gear. Bring your own mask only if you already know it fits. A leaking rental mask is annoying, and a mask you have never tried is not automatically better. Fins from the resort are fine for Hol Chan and for the water by the dock.

Bring mineral sunscreen, and put it on before the boat. Belize has restricted some reef-toxic sunscreen ingredients. The exact list can change, so confirm the current Hol Chan rule, and do not treat a pretty bottle labeled "reef friendly" as proof. A hat with a strap and polarized sunglasses you can afford to lose complete the boat kit. A dry bag is the difference between a phone that comes home and a phone that does not. The Hol Chan guide covers what the channel and Shark Ray Alley feel like, including why you should not touch the animals.

If you are a certified diver, bring your certification card. Local reef diving is listed from $100 and requires it. The resort does not publish a promise that spare cards can be looked up. The snorkeling page is the list of boats. Book the half-day or Mexico Rocks before you pack around a trip you have not reserved.

Insect repellent earns a place if you are kayaking mangroves or sitting outside at dusk. It is less important for a noon snorkel on the outer reef. Pack a small bottle, not a case.

Sun, rain, and the bag that has to fly to San Pedro

A light rain jacket or a thin shell is enough. An umbrella loses to the wind on a golf cart. In the dry season you may not use the jacket. In a green-season afternoon you will. Hurricane months can bring heavier rain. Check the forecast the week you travel rather than packing a wardrobe for a storm that is not there.

The domestic hop from Belize City to San Pedro is a small plane. Soft bags fit the reality of that flight better than a large hard shell. Weight limits are the airline's, not the resort's. Read how to get to Ambergris Caye before you buy the second suitcase. If you take the water taxi instead, you still have to carry the bag onto a boat and off a dock. Two smaller bags beat one bag you cannot lift.

Medication stays in your personal item, in the original packaging if you want the least friction. A basic kit, blister plasters, and whatever you take for seasickness belong in the same pouch. The island has a clinic and pharmacies in San Pedro. It does not have your specific prescription on the shelf at 9 PM. Bring enough for the whole stay plus a delay.

Documents and money

Carry a passport that covers the whole trip, and confirm the current entry rule before you fly. The resort's Belize guide says many visitors are stamped in without a visa for a short stay. That is not a ruling. The page that explains how to check is entry rules and money. US dollars are widely accepted. The Belize dollar is pegged at 2 to 1 with the US dollar. A modest amount of small US bills is more useful than a thick wad, because golf-cart deposits, tips, and small boats are awkward on a single large note. Cards work widely in town. Do not rely on a card for every dock.

Tell your bank you are traveling. A frozen card on arrival day is a worse problem than a forgotten rash guard. Keep a photo of your passport somewhere you can reach if the original is in the safe.

What you can leave at home

Leave snorkel gear you do not love, beach toys the room does not need, a second formal outfit, and any "just in case" shoes. Leave a drone unless you already know the local flying rules. This page will not invent a drone permit. Leave valuables you would be unhappy dropping between the planks of a pier.

The room has Wi-Fi. It is listed as included, not as a speed guarantee, so do not pack on the assumption you will upload a film every night. Download what you need before the hop. A small bluetooth speaker is unnecessary on a deck that is trying to be quiet, and it is unkind to the next cabana.

You do not need to pack breakfast. It is included. During The Mayan's closure through November 11, 2026, in-house guests receive continental breakfast. The restaurant reopens for public dining on November 12, 2026, at brunch hours, not as a public dinner. Pack a snack for the travel day anyway. The hop and the boat are not a meal service.

Getting around, and the rest of the trip

A golf cart is the item people forget to reserve and then wish they had. You do not pack it. You book it. Tax, insurance, and the bridge pass are included. If you are only on property, skip it. If you want San Pedro on your own clock, add it on experiences.

The rooms you are packing for are suites, duplex and one-bedroom overwater cabanas, the two-bedroom family cabana, and beachfront Villa 41. The rates page explains that those nightly prices change daily. Families in the two-bedroom should pack the same reef kit per person who will actually snorkel, not a duplicate of every adult item for every child. Confirm ages and water comfort with reservations if a child is unsure. See live prices once the bag and the dates match.

Couples adding a $120 room setup do not need to pack petals or candles. Groups on a buyout of 18 king rooms should still pack as individuals. The property does not publish a shared closet. Advisors sending a client should point them at this page and at travel advisors for the 20% commission booking, not at a packing list as a rate. Weddings on weddings are the time to pack the one outfit that matters, in a garment bag that survives the small plane, and to tell the domestic airline about it. Read reviews if you want to see what guests actually wore the week they came. Then stop packing. The reef does not care about the fourth shirt.

Questions travelers ask

Do I need to pack snorkel gear for Lina Point?

No. Room rates include snorkel equipment, kayaks, and paddleboards. A mask that fits your face is still worth bringing if you already own one. Reef trips to Hol Chan are a separate booking.

What shoes work on Ambergris Caye?

Sandals you can walk in, and a pair that can get wet on the dock. Golf carts are the usual ride into San Pedro. You rarely need closed shoes unless a mainland ruins day is on the plan.

Is a raincoat worth the space?

A light rain jacket is enough. Dry-season showers are uncommon and green-season rain is often a short afternoon burst. Hurricane months can bring heavier rain, so check the forecast the week you travel.
