Overwater stays: Belize, the Maldives, Bora Bora, and Mexico

An honest comparison of travel time, cost, and vibe. Room rates change daily. See live prices. No invented Maldives or Bora Bora prices.

What you are actually comparing

An overwater bungalow is a room on stilts above clear water, with a deck and, at the better ones, a way to see the water through the floor. That room type exists in the Maldives, in French Polynesia, in a few other Pacific and Indian Ocean resorts, and in Belize. The room is the similar part. The journey, the reef, the town, and the nightly rate are not.

Lina Point, in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, is the only freehold overwater hotel on the island. The overwater rooms are cabanas: a duplex, a standalone one-bedroom, and a two-bedroom, with glass-floor panels and private decks. Suites in the main building and beachfront Villa 41 are on the same property if you want solid ground. The planning page for overwater bungalows in Belize is the bungalows guide. This page is the comparison.

This guide does not publish a Maldives nightly rate, a Bora Bora nightly rate, or a Mexico nightly rate. Those numbers move with the resort, the season, and the flight. Anyone who quotes a single "from" price for a whole country is guessing. Lina Point room rates change daily too. See live prices instead of a printed nightly figure.

Travel time

From most of the United States, Belize is a short-haul trip plus a small hop. International flights land at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE), near Belize City. The Belize guide on this site quotes about 2 to 4 hours of flying from US hubs, then a domestic flight of about 15 to 20 minutes to San Pedro, or a longer water taxi. The full route is on how to get to Ambergris Caye. You can leave home in the morning and be over the water the same day if the connection is sane.

The Maldives is a long-haul trip. From the eastern United States it is commonly most of a day or longer, often overnight, with a connection, and many resorts then add a seaplane or a speedboat after you land. Bora Bora is the same shape of journey from the other direction: a long flight to Tahiti, then a short hop to the island, and often a boat to a motu. You spend the first day, and sometimes the second, getting there. Jet lag is part of the product.

Mexico's Caribbean coast, Cancún and the Costa Maya among the usual doors, is a short flight from many US cities, in the same family of effort as Belize. The difference is not the hours in the air. The difference is what is waiting: a large beach-hotel coast, with jungle and ruins inland, rather than a bungalow standing on the Belize Barrier Reef beside a small island town. Some Mexico properties use the word overwater for a pier room or a pool villa. Read the photo. A room above a lagoon pool is not the same stay as a cabana on the reef.

If the trip has to fit in four or five nights, Belize and Mexico are the ones that do not spend half the holiday in airports. If the trip is ten days and the flight is the point of the celebration, the Maldives or Bora Bora can be worth the haul. The best time to visit still matters in Belize: dry season is November through April, and September and October are the higher hurricane-risk months.

How nightly rates work

Lina Point does not publish a fixed nightly rate. Room rates change daily. See live rates for the dates you are actually comparing. The rooms page shows the layouts: second-floor and first-floor suites, a duplex overwater cabana, a standalone one-bedroom overwater cabana, a two-bedroom overwater cabana, and Villa 41, which is beachfront rather than over the water. The rates page explains direct booking and the cancellation policy. It does not print a fixed nightly price.

The minimum stay is 2 nights. Daily breakfast, kayaks, snorkel gear, paddleboards, Wi-Fi, and the overwater infinity pool are part of the stay as the homepage and FAQ describe them. Reef boats, spa treatments, golf carts, and private dinners are not included. Direct booking on linapoint.com is the best price and beats online travel agencies by at least 6%.

A fair comparison adds the flights. Price your own cities and dates, then set that live quote next to a long-haul ticket. This page will not invent the other side of the table.

Vibe, in plain language

Belize is English-speaking. The official language is English, and you will also hear Spanish and Kriol in San Pedro. The island pace is golf carts, a small town, and a reef that starts close to shore. You can be in the water beside the resort and in town for a meal without a seaplane. That is the opposite of a Maldives resort that is the whole island: beautiful, and deliberately hard to leave.

Bora Bora is a lagoon famous for a reason. The peaks, the blue water, and the honeymoon reputation are the product. It is also French Polynesia: a different language environment, a different food culture, and a long way from a weekend. People who want that specific postcard should go there. People who want the postcard and also a town, a reef reserve, and a flight that does not erase two days should look at Ambergris Caye.

Mexico's Caribbean is easy, social, and built for volume. You will find more restaurants, more nightlife, and more resort brands in a single hotel zone than San Pedro has on the whole island. You will not find Lina Point's situation: a freehold overwater hotel on the barrier reef, with San Pedro a golf-cart ride away and Hol Chan a boat ride away. If the group wants a big beach club, Mexico may fit better. If the group wants the room over the reef, Belize is the shorter way to that room.

Guest stories from people who have already stayed are on reviews. They are not a ranking, and this page is not a ranking either.

The reef, and the days that are not the deck

The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, after Australia's. Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are a boat trip, not a swim from the dock. The half-day is listed from $60. The logistics are in the Hol Chan guide, and the bookable list is on snorkeling and experiences. Mexico Rocks is the shallower northern stop. The Great Blue Hole is a full-day dive for certified divers, listed from $350, not a feature of the cabana.

The Maldives has extraordinary reefs too, often reached from a resort that sits inside its own atoll. Bora Bora's lagoon snorkeling is a different landscape: sand, coral heads, and that steep volcanic skyline. Mexico shares the Mesoamerican reef along parts of its Caribbean coast, with different parks and a different crowd. None of those facts makes one country "better." They tell you whether you want a reserve you visit by boat from a town, or a resort that is the destination by itself.

A golf cart is how you see San Pedro on your own. Four hours is listed at $35, with tax, insurance, and the bridge pass included. You do not need one to stay on property.

Who this stay fits, and who should book the long haul

Choose Belize if the overwater room is the point and the flight has to stay short. Choose it if you want a reef reserve, a small town, and the option of a mainland ruin without changing countries. Choose it when the live price for your dates, not a printed nightly rate, is the budget you are holding next to a long-haul quote.

Choose the Maldives or Bora Bora if you have the days, you want that specific remoteness, and you have priced the flights honestly. Choose Mexico if you want a short flight and a bigger resort coast, and you have confirmed that the room in the photo is actually over the sea.

Couples should read honeymoons and the honeymoon planning guide. Nothing honeymoon-specific is complimentary. A romantic room setup is $120. A private rooftop dinner is $250. The Mayan reopens for public dining on November 12, 2026. Before that, do not plan a walk-in meal there.

A full buyout is 18 king rooms and up to 36 guests. That conversation starts on groups and the group and advisor guide. Travel advisors earn 20% commission on client stays and should use travel advisors, not the public rate as a commission guess. Weddings and vow renewals are on weddings.

Free cancellation is 30 or more days before check-in. From 14 to 29 days the refund is 50%. Inside 14 days there is no refund. That policy is the same whatever country you compared on the way to this page.

Questions travelers ask

Does Belize have overwater bungalows?

Yes. Lina Point in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, is the only freehold overwater hotel on the island. The overwater cabanas have glass-floor panels and private decks. Suites in the main building, and beachfront Villa 41, are on the same property.

Are Belize overwater bungalows cheaper than the Maldives or Bora Bora?

The flight is usually the large difference: Belize is a short trip from the United States, while the Maldives and Bora Bora are long-haul. Lina Point room rates change daily — see live prices on the booking page. This guide does not publish a Maldives, Bora Bora, or Mexico nightly rate. Compare a real quote.

What do people mean by huts or bungalows over the water in Belize?

Those phrases describe the same stay: a room on stilts above the Caribbean. At Lina Point the rooms are overwater cabanas, not a separate hut category.
